A healthy digestive system is at the heart of overall wellness from beautiful skin, high energy levels, and vitality itself. All organs matter in the body, but the digestive tract is one of the most important to have functioning at its best to achieve any of these goals. One way to do that is through colon hydrotherapy, often called colonics. It aims at complementing health and supports the function of the entire digestive system.
What Is Colon Hydrotherapy?
Colon hydrotherapy, sometimes called a colon cleanse, is a way to clean the colon. It’s often used in preparation for a medical procedure, but there are some reasons to use it more frequently, including when there are indications that detoxification may be beneficial.
What does the procedure entail?
The procedure is comfortable and, often, refreshing. Colon hydrotherapists use a small amount of water that is flushed into the colon gently. This allows for the colon’s natural peristaltic action to help release waste. This is a continual process, don’t for several minutes. There’s no pain involved. There is no need for anesthesia during the procedure.
During the procedure, a small irrigation nozzle is placed into the rectum. This allows for the doctors to send water into the colon. Typically, this is done over a period of 45 minutes to an hour. A controlled stream of water at just the right temperature and pressure is released into the colon during that time. This allows for the flushing of the whole large intestine.
What does the procedure do?
Colon irrigations like this are designed to remove backed-up waste from the colon. The entire length of the colon is reached, allowing it to be highly cleansed, much more so than what would be expected with an enema. This is done using purified water (purified with an UltraViolet Water Purification System) that is safe for the body.
What Are the Benefits of Hydrotherapy?
Many people benefit from hydrotherapy simply because it helps them feel more refreshed. Yet, it may do much more than this, including helping to reset the digestive tract. For those who experience health conditions such as these, the benefits may be numerous:
- IBS (irritable bowel syndrome)
- IBD (inflammatory bowel disorder)
- Chronic constipation
- Chronic skin conditions, including acne
- Fatigue that’s unexplained
- Foul body odor
- Frequent and sometimes severe headaches
- Sciatic pain
- Abdominal gas and bloating
- Backaches
- Mental confusion
- A low resistance to colds or other illnesses
- Constant or unexplained diarrhea
- Low energy and vitality
What will it do for my body?
During a colon cleanse like this, the bacteria and other debris from the colon are washed out. That may include any impacted fecal material present. By removing all of this “bad” material, the digestive tract is able to function normally again. This offers some nice benefits for many people, including the ability to simply feel less bloated and unwell. Of course, that feeling begins right away, too.
Keep in mind that there are both good and bad bacteria in the colon. The good bacteria help to keep the bad in check. Yet, this can become impossible in some situations, especially when the gut is unhealthy due to a build-up of the bad bacteria. This may be what is causing some or all of your health issues. The goal of this type of colon cleanse, then, is to create a healthier environment so that good bacteria – which helps with food digestion and nutrient intake – remains in control.
Can it help with my medical conditions?
A colon may offer some health benefits. There’s always the need to understand what a procedure like this can do for you. Colon bacteria is behind many of the health conditions people have today. That includes conditions related to inflammation, chronic constipation, and IBS. In this situation, it may be possible for the colon to get some help bringing those bacteria levels back under control, allowing for the symptoms a person has related to their digestive health to start to fade.
In many cases, colon hydrotherapy can help you to feel better fast if you have one or more of these conditions. While it may not cure your health condition, it may help your digestive system to work far more effectively, reducing symptoms and giving your immune system the ability to improve.
What Should I Expect from a Colon Hydrotherapy Session?
To cleanse the intestinal tract, the hydrotherapy session requires you to lay down for about an hour. During that time, you’ll have a drape over your body, and you’ll feel relaxed and comfortable. There is no pain or discomfort during the procedure at all – you may even find it enjoyable because it feels refreshing. Most people are relaxed, but they do not feel drowsy or fatigued. Often, a person is able to go back to their daily activities right away.
Some people may experience slight tiredness. That typically lasts for just a short time. Generally, there is no downtime from this procedure.
Are There Risks with Hydrotherapy?
Every procedure carries some risks, but most people do not experience anything negative during colon hydrotherapy. Still, it is wise to know what could happen.
First, keep in mind that this procedure may not be right for everyone with digestive issues. For those who have had a diagnosis of the following conditions, especially in the last 6 months, this procedure may not be safe:
- Congestive heart failure
- Intestinal perforation
- Carcinoma of the rectum
- Severe hemorrhoids
- Abdominal hernia
- Fissures or fistula
- First and last trimester of pregnancy
- Recent colon or rectal surgery
- Abdominal surgery
- Cirrhosis of the liver
- Being over 300 pounds
There may be other risks to this procedure in some people. Most are mild unwanted effects such as stomach pain, diarrhea, dizziness, soreness, or a feeling of fullness or bloating.
Some more severe, though rare, complications include pancreatitis, kidney failure, or heart failure.
What other risks may be involved?
As with any medical procedure, there is a risk of infection, though we use the safest possible methods for sanitation and irrigation. There is also the risk of a perforated bowel.
Another concern is dehydration. When not done properly, a person can become dehydrated from this procedure. However, we work closely with you to minimize this risk and provide you with very specific steps to take after it to ensure your body is getting all of the support it needs to avoid this. We also help your body with the cleansing and resetting process by providing you with strategies for reducing any risk of discomfort not just during the procedure but also going forward. That includes helping you to avoid worsening digestive disorders.
